So Ivy made a few good points about people who can’t sing and aspiring idols who should be able to do so. Long story short, here’s specifically what she said:

“If you can sing, be a singer, but if can’t, don’t. If you don’t heed my advice I will punish you. When I see an aspiring singer who can’t sing, I feel like that the person only wants to become a singer to become a celebrity.”

Truer words were never spoken, especially on the last part.

Along with the translated article were a few netizen comments.

“Dambi, Ivy is calling for you~~”
“Honestly, Ivy sounds good live. I’m neither an anti or a fan, but I think she’s right…”
“This kind of advice can only be given by a capable person like Ivy herself…”
“Gyuri, Goo Hara, Yoona, Jessica, Sandara Park, Seung Ri, Sohee, Taecyeon, Nichkhun, Chansung, Super Junior, Minho, Hyung Joon… are you listening?”

So you can probably imagine now how much butthurt and wank have been caused by the last part. It’s reached to the point most people are reacting purely over the comment itself and not specifically on Ivy’s words. Some batshit fans even went so far as to insult the singer herself.Ahhh…well crazy fangirls and fanboys.Welcome to Korean fandom.

First, let’s get to the real substance of the article–Ivy’s words.

Now, my opinion on this is very simple. It’s true you don’t deserve to be called a singer if you can’t even hold a decent tune especially on the stage. Bathroom/karaoke singing does not count. And frankly speaking, most of the people listed there don’t have really decent vocals. But there’s a reason most of them are called idol singers. Which means they’re part of idol groups.

Korean pop music, especially on the idol subculture, does not necessarily take well on vocals >> faces. In fact, it’s the opposite. Faces over talent. You don’t need to sing that good just to be famous and gain a legion of fan cafés dedicated to you.

Particularly on idol groups. Apart from good live singing capabilities, there must also be some fresh and handsome faces to fawn and spazz about and wacky, likeable TV personalities. Gone were the days when being an idol just meant being a pretty boy and churning out bubblegum pop songs. The trend nowadays is to get the complete package: there are two or three decent and/or spectacular voices in the group, one or two decent rappers, excellent dancing skills and dazzling aegyo/beauty. And apart from that, you have to be lively and charming on TV as well. Variety shows can either make or break your group.

There’s talent but there also has to be beauty and charms. In fact, beauty is only second place as important compared to having a likable personality these days. You might not exactly be that gorgeous but you still have tons of adoring fangirls just because you’re adorkably cute on stage or being an epic 4D character in the group.

That’s the way Kpop is, let’s face it. Seeing the idols’ personalities offstage and onstage is now an essential part of the job. I’ll be frank that unless your average idol group has some mindblowing skills on stage plus epically awesome songs, I’m not going to give you my time of the day unless you manage to catch my attention on TV.

So the essential ingredients for being an idol are: number one are charming personalities, number two is beauty and number three is talent, in that order.

So now that we’ve established the number one fact you don’t really need that epically mind-blowing talent to get people’s attention, let’s get back to our main point here.

There are tons of iconic entertainers everywhere without having that much fantastic singing capabilities. Ivy’s advice is only applicable for those who’re really serious with their music career. As in being a real singer and not just an idol singer. But if you’re going to try and apply that in real life idol world, you’re going to run into some trouble. Because many people become idols not on their singing talent (or lack thereof) but on their looks and charms.

I mean, when did becoming an idol means turning into the next Pavarotti?

Okay, that was an extreme comparison but honestly among idol groups there will always be that extremely good looking/charming member who can’t sing to save a life but is always #1 for the fans.

Let’s have a look with those people who got name-dropped. Even a whole idol group got flambasted as well.

First up. Our favorite chipmunk girl. Well, Sohee can’t really sing. Sorry bb, I love you but honestly… : ( your voice gets overpowered compared to the four other members of Wondergirls.

The same goes for Sandara. And in relation to that, Thunder as well. Like sister, like brother. Weak voices but nice faces.

As for Goo Hara, yes sfm. Girl can dance decently but about her singing…vocal chords still need power.

As much as I stan for Seung-ri bb, i have to admit he has the weakest voice of Big Bang. But Idk, ever since his Strong Baby promotions, I have to admit he’s improved considerably on his own. But on group performances, he’s still overshadowed in the vocals department.

I can understand Yoona’s though, she herself had said at one point she hadn’t really wished to take up singing, she was actually going for acting when she auditioned. As for Jessica, no offense that girl’s singing really gets on my nerves. Personally I think she can hold a tune, she can reach the high notes but honestly her voice is very bland, there’s no depth and little power. She can sing but she’s not that good. I find her singing sometimes to be too nasal and screechy for my liking. The same holds true for her sibling, Krystal.

As for the whole of Super Junior–have to disagree there. Super Junior K.R.Y. is excluded, that’s understood. Leeteuk also has a decent singing voice. But for the rest of Suju, it’s pretty mediocre in all honesty. They’re very talented in other aspects though, such as dancing and in entertainment.

There are many more names dropped which I think holds valid and true but I’m not going to discuss them any further.

I love my fandoms to death but you gotta admit when a person can’t really sing. I’m a stan but I do know when my idols have limits/faults that people will always nitpick and exaggerate. There’s a difference between a  fangirl/stan and being plain batshit stupid over your idols.

I’m of the opinion any idol group still needs some singing credibility and vocal chops to be taken seriously and not just any other variety show tandem. But demanding that every single one of them needs to be on the same caliber as their lead vocalists isn’t that really necessary. That’s why they’re a group and not solo singers. These groups manage to balance and compliment each member’s lack and strengths.

I haven’t really jumped into the Kpop bandwagon because of the voices because honestly speaking, if  I wanted to hear some real, good music, I’ll stick back to my homeland’s OPM. That’s Original Pinoy Music for you peeps. Carol Banawa, Yeng Constantino, Sam Milby and Christian Bautista FTW. My real music idols can out-sing any Kpop idol I know and that’s a fact. The likes of Leona Lewis, Jordin Sparks, David Cook, Kelly Clarkson and more.

What attracted me to Kpop in the first place are not just the good looks (although I’ll be lying if I didn’t admit that’s a very major PLUS with the fandom) was the catchy songs, hook beats and cool concepts. The dances, the live performances and the Korean variety shows. Star Golden Bell, Family Outing, etc. The dorky, quirky and funny personalities of my idols.

In summary: anyone aspiring to be an idol singer still needs to sing. But you don’t have to sing that well to achieve epic stardom. Just tickling the public’s fancy is already good.

And music is music. If I like it I’ll listen to it. :) )

Right. I know it’s way overdue, but oh whatevs. A review is a review is a review. Whether it’s way past the fresh release date now ;)

First off, since this is an SM release, there is bound to be some cracky, lulz-ish explanation for this.

Tada!

The group will be coming back with a new unique concept and sound. It is revealed that the song is an Afro-electro genre music with African drums and groove. The song title will be Ring Ding Dong.

Afro-electro  complete with drums and groove.

This is just code for CRACKTASTIC in case you people didn’t know.

And it really is.

WHAT?!? ಠ_ಠ

Here’s the lyrics so you can see for yourself how cracky this song cracks the crack-o-meter:

I thought it was COLA COLA ELASTIC~ when it’s actually supposed to be ROCKA ROCKA. And it should be completely retitled as LING DING DING DONG~

Lulzy lyrics and title aside, seriously, this is one of Shinee’s best songs ever. I really mean that, no matter how ridic this song is actually. Just hum along and take no notice of the Kongrish lulz.

First things first, I ♥ this song so much. Seriously.

One: The boys look effing cool with their new, ~manly~ concept (although honestly there’s a long, long way to go before they can even reach my definition of manliness).

Two: The choreography. Look closely at the Ring Ding Dong part. Must hurt the hips a lot though :D

Three: Jonghyun. Blond Hair. akljfklajlkfjalkkljklasjklak;lwj *________________________* ’nuff said.

00015ew0

Four: ALL YOUR RIDIC KONGRISH PHRASES ARE US

Five: Afro-electro or whatever, this song is just awesome. It’s ridiculous, catchy and way upbeat. A++ in my book. Although there’s  a lot more autotune in this than usual SM songs but who cares, it sounds AAAMAAZING~

Six: Key’s hair! <3 Despite the nerdy bowl cut hairstyle, boy is doing it justice.

004p192z

werk it key bb!

Seven: This song just reeks of Shinee’s contemporary R&B style. You know I was kind of disappointed at first with their latest batch of songs in the Romeo mini-album, since most are just pop and ballads, which isn’t bad in itself but hel~looo… IDK, it’s not the boys’ usual songs.Where’s my R&B?

Rating: A cracktastic 5 out of 5!

They just released the full song today :)

And I am liking it!

Sadly, unlike SM, JYP has no lulzy official explanations as of why this song came out to be. But I guess with the recent hullabaloo with 2PM and their leadja, it’s best to do with cryptic messages for now.

IDK why but I think JYP and his team of composers must have been blessed with so much song-making win with this new album. I’m liking not one but two singles from the same release which is pretty unusual with Kpop. See, most of the time, idol groups have one really great hit song and the others are just filler tracks or plain crap (SM’s releases are a good example). I guess after tragedy there’s a period of renaissance to follow.

Here’s the lyrics for a better understanding of the song:

She’s gone, gone
She’s gone, gone
She’s gone, gone
She’s gone, gone

You are walking away
as you are brushing off my hands
I stil haven’t
told you that I love you
As I glimpse back to see you
the world only gets foggy and cloudy
The days I loved breaks away

I was crazy (I’m sorry girl)
for you (I’m so sorry girl)
I couldn’t even say it, and I let you go
She is (I’m so sorry girl)
getting farther and farther (I’m so sorry girl)
Love can’t do this to me!

Ended it after saying it was too hard and tiring
If this was a true love, then I should have held you back
All I can see is your leaving figure
The days I loved breaks away

I was crazy (I’m sorry girl)
for you (I’m so sorry girl)
I couldn’t even say it, and I let you go
She is (I’m so sorry girl)
getting farther and farther (I’m so sorry girl)
Love can’t do this to me!

How will I ever know?
Why should I let you go?
Why? Why?
What about our love,
Can’t let go
you’ve ripped my heart (Oh no)
Couldn’t even tell you to stay
and all I did was watch you leave
Now it’s too late to regret
and day by day I’m going crazy
and I am going crazy as I think about you
Yes, I am crazy for you

I was crazy (I’m sorry girl)
for you (I’m so sorry girl)
I couldn’t even say it, and I let you go
She is (I’m so sorry girl)
getting farther and farther (I’m so sorry girl)
Love can’t do this to me!

Oh and for you 2PM noobs here’s a breakdown of each boys’ individual part with this song:

Nickhun – Verse 1
Wooyoung – Pre-chorus
Junsu – Chorus
Junho – Chorus
Chansung – Verse 2
Wooyoung – Pre-chorus
Junsu – Chorus
Junho – Chorus
Taecyeon – Rap
Junsu – Chorus with Junho adlibs
Junho – Chorus with Junsu adlibs

Anyway, what’s the highlights here? IMO, best part of the song was Taec’s rap. Some Hottests think it’s awkwardly-worded but whatevs, IDGAF it sounds great! Taec has his usual swagger here and you can’t go wrong with that. And the intro with all that jazzy melancholic beats just suit the overall mood. If you’re thinking based from the teaser this is just one of those depressing ballads boy that’s all wrong! This song is more subdued in meaning but definitely in an upbeat way :D

Rating: 5 over 5

Overall, really liking 2PM’s newest batch of songs. I mean it’s been only two of them released so far and it’s all been really really good, any singer against them when they release the full album will have a hard time in the charts.

Yesterday, SM’s newest rookie on the block released a new single from their first mini-album. I know it’s rather early to make a review about it but oh whatevs. When they release their mini-album on the 9th (granted that SM won’t be a bitch and delay it for some hyper convoluted reason), I’ll review the rest of the songs as well.

First off, I’d like to post SM’s official description about the song. (Because we need to be unbiased and fair as well blah blah and all that, but seriously, it’s for the lulz)

The title song of the single, Chu~♡, is a Euro Pop Dance song which was made with the famous trendy feel which is popular in Europe, along with the drum sounds which are mainly used in African music.

In the lyrics, ‘Chu~♡’ is an onomatopoeic representation of the word that expresses the sound. The lyrics is set in a fairy-tale motif and it is about the main character waking up from sleep with a kiss, and through the kiss the main character, filled with curiosity, wants to go out into the world. With the repetitive pronunciation of ‘Chu’, you can feel the exquisite toxicity.

At first I thought this meant that behind this long-winded explanation it all boiled down to one thing. Chu~♥ is just Morning Musume’s brand new Korean single. I mean, what with the cutesy thing and all complete with a heart and  a tilde (that’s the official name for the fancy ~), it’s something you’d expect from a Jpop girl group. Chu chu chu, I bet you Momosu or anyone of H!P’s girl emporium have already released something like this.

Which is really, really sad, because despite my initial dislike to this group I am really looking forward to them and see how they live out their potential. Make no mistake, despite being a talented group, f(x) has no distinguished accolades as of yet (asides from winning the monthly Cyworld digital award but then again I think every Kpop idol group have one of these) and La Cha Ta in all honesty is a flop when compared to other rookies’ debut single. The song only peaked at number nine on the weekly charts. And never climbed back again.

With the repetitive pronunciation of ‘Chu’, you can feel the exquisite toxicity.

You know, it’s stuff like this that makes any of SM’s official explanation for their songs a serious goldmine. Or any official explanations from them for that matter. How exquisitely toxic pronouncing Chu~~~ over and over can it be? Let’s ask the Japanese, since they’re the ones who came up with the whole kiss kiss = chu chu sound effect.

Exquisite toxicity sounds like a good name for a band, btw. ;)

And now to the song.

I CAN HAZ AUTOTUNE!

This means no more bubblegum cutesy pop crap ftw! But beware,  overuse of autotune leads to some sucky, repetitive songs.

Lyrics, btw:

Love the song’s intro and the autotune–IDGAF whether or not their voices are synthesized because I know they can sing live unlike some idol groups I know. Great songs but shaky lives and crappy MV to boot, I’m looking at you 4minute.

Now, the downsides–every song has one anyway:

1.) Amber’s rap

Ugh, don’t even get me started. Deep voice but no flow does not equate to rapping. Homie, rapping isn’t about shouting, it’s about having a flow and doing it well. Even HyunA’s chipmunk rap can do better than this. I may detest HyunA’s helium voice but at least she can rap decently. Amber’s is just…. Grade F. You’ve got the voice girl, now do something about it.

2.) Sulli/Krystal/well whoever it is

Whoever sings the first verse right after the intro and most parts of the song should have it done by Luna instead. A tinny, high-pitched voice doesn’t belong here. It just ruins the song and make it more of  a hot mess.

Overall: 4 out of 5

Do it do it chu~ it’s true, it’s true, it’s true~  I call this a hit in my book :D

Minus the butchered rap and whiny verses, this song is as good as it can be. Now let’s wait whether it’s gonna rock the charts or it will just La Cha Ta Ta its way to flop.

First of all, i’m not talking about myself here i’m a girl. haha! Anyways, I am always amazed by FANBOYS – how they admire artists or celebrities and stuffs. Well maybe because they are very RARE in this world. I have a friend, a classmate actually, he loves Big Bang, Arashi, and L’arc en ciel. He loves G-Dragon and Hyde! Either Ohno or Aiba is his favorite from Arashi. haha! The truth is I just categorized him as a fanboy because he doesn’t confess that he is really ONE. haha! He said that he is just influenced by his sister that’s why he is really into jkpop/rock stuffs. From what I have observed, he only likes the three boygroups which I mentioned earlier. And oh, he really loves GD! He doesn’t like SuJu, SHINee, and SNSD. He seems to be allergic to SM TOWN! haha! Knowing the fact that I LOVE SHINee, SuJu, and SNSD, he would always make fun of them! urgh! That is so annoying! I hate him! :P

Did I mention that he loves/worships GD? haha! He loves BB but definitely, GD is his fave! Yes, that’s true! His primary picture in a site is GD! He has an album in a site which contains GD’s pics! GD is and will always be perfect in his eyes! :P He wants to have GD’s album! But he doesn’t have money to buy it.. haha! When he borrows my phone, he would always listen to Big Bang’s and GD’s songs! He is always updated about BB’s latest scoops, news, info, performances, TV appearances, etc. He is more knowledgable about them than me. And oh, he always SINGS their songs! Yes, he does! bwahaha! there was a time I was shocked. out of nowhere, he just sang Breathe! haha! Some of his faves are Haru haru, This Love, Last Farewell, Lies, The Leaders, Heartbreaker, and Breathe. Indeed, he is a Big Bang fanboy! And, I think nothing’s wrong with that. I actually find it very cute and amusing! :P

FANBOYS would never fail to amaze me, ever!

As a matter of fact, he introduced me to Big Bang. I would not be a VIP if he was not my friend.. hehe!

*i’m not in the mood while writing this.. something’s bothering my mind so please forgive me for my lame post.. thanks!*

*btw.. this is not yet done because i have many things to say about him.. i’ll just continue writing next time*

My trip to Asian music first started with Jpop. I was an animé geek back then (CCS ftw!), and I liked what I heard from their opening and closing themes.  Never mind that my parents gave me strange looks every time I played them on the speakers, who the eff cares if don’t understand a single thing (except for the occasional random Engrish thrown in) as long as the music rocks your socks.

Later, I met my cousin, who proceeded to give me a proper orientation of Jpop 101. Evidently, what I was hearing–animé OSTs do not actually count–was just a sliver of the whole cake. So I was thrown in the musical realms of Gackt, Ayumi Hamasaki, L’arc en ciel, Utada Hikaru, Namie Amuro and your occasional boyband/girlband (which I fervently detested because most of them resembled DDR songs in my ears back then).

Sad to say, my cousin sort of failed to lure me in the world of Jpop. My playlist was more in tune with the Black Eyed Peas, Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake and the like. I dunno, most of the songs I heard from her samplers was kind of hit-and-miss. If I didn’t like what I heard the first time, most likely the song won’t make much of a dent to my ear candy no matter how many replays it got. Plus, excuse my limited taste in music back then, everything that wasn’t hiphop/r&b/rap/punk rock was considered cheesy and passé.

But hooray for Jdoramas!

Let’s thank Nobuta no Produce and 1 Liter of Tears specifically.  They brought me back the brink of Jpop alienation to full force invasion.

As I’ve already said somewhere, my ears run away from everything bubblegum pop cheesy. Especially JE. But Johnny Kitagawa’s mandatory requirement for doramas to use their songs whenever a jyanni is featured is effective. It makes even the most hardened critics not only tolerate extreme cheesiness but even like them.  Case in point is Arashi’s One Love and Hana Yori Dango. I switch channels whenever it’s time to play the song but whatevs, a couple of episodes later and I find it goddamn catchy as hell. Or V6′s Change the World. This is the first JE song I’ve encountered courtesy of Inuyasha. Normally you wouldn’t catch me dead listening to songs like this but…stuff happens. The JE plague is bred and born and spread.

Because of Kame and Pi of Nobuta fame, my Jpop induction was finally complete. I was introduced to the world of idols and Johnny’s.

IMO, JE still ranks at the top of my bestseller list of Cheesy Pop but blame the ikemen. IDGAF anymore, KAT-TUN rules my playlists now. Just don’t mind the outrageous, WTF costumes, focus on the sparkly, ghei, happy men and BE HAPPY. Seriously.

Also, it helps when ikemen have tons of dramas to ogle and obsess about. I think this is the most important, determining factor when it comes to Jpop idols. Get involved in just about every CM and drama out there. *_________* More eyecandy is yummy and tasty^^

More importantly, I love the Jpop fandom. No shit. I got myself an account in livejournal just because of JE (well I think you know what starstruck fangirls do with their lj) and got meshed into another dimension of the web altogether. Macros, gifs, and lulz oh my! I think my favorite would be all the pointless wank and drama that ensued for the alleged Ohno-got-a-threesome-and-smoked-marijuana. And the perpetual Akame feud. (Here’s a thought KAT-TUNatics, this band isn’t limited to Kame and Jin, ‘mkay?)

Buuuut………….

It turns out I’m only at the beginning of the road. There’s more to Jpop than JE and boybands.

We’ll tackle that later ;)

mizushima hiro.

BAMF! ladies

BAMF! ladies

:3

So I was randomly watching jdoramas from no particular order and getting distracted with ikemen and jpop. I have tons of series that I dropped last summer either from boredom or not having enough time to sit through the whole thing.

That unf-worthy pic of Hiro-chan above is from Mei-chan no Shitsuji. It’s like Ikemen Paradise II, with the usual standard dorama elements–girl resembles a fish out of water (read: the standard poor girl stuck in a rich kids’ world) , elitist bitches, an extremely glamorous school and more importantly tons of hot guys.

Since I’ve already had my fair share of critically acclaimed dramas that keeps your head and heart occupied from start to finish, I’ve decided to pick one that’s mindlessly fluffy but engaging at the same time.

I can say a lot of things about Mei-chan no Shitsuji of why you should watch it when you’re just bored and don’t mind overtaxing your brain cells and have your dose of pretty girls and boys but seriously…

Everything that’s good in this drama can just be exemplified by one person only.

MIZUSHIMA HIRO

I’ve already spotted him around a few doramas I’ve watched but haven’t taken the time to look up fangirl about him but MNS converted me to the Hiro legion.

A list of Mizushima Hiro’s Best:

  • best eye smile
  • best lips
  • best male I’ve seen to sport that tousled, messy hair look
  • best acting  (fine, this one is questionable but you can’t deny his acting chops)

I’d go so far to say that this guy is way better than his JE counterpart–everyone’s favorite Arashi diva Matsumoto Jun.

Now, before Arashi fangirls will maim me, I have to say I like Arashi. On TV, but not their music, because that’s another post that we’ll tackle for some other time.

Also, contrary to everyone’ opinion, I think Nino and Ohno are better looking than Arashi’s Flower Princess.

When I first saw him on Hana Yori Dango, my brain just screamed ‘MJ lookalike!’  Only with plump red lips and minus the shocking white bleach skin. Also at this point I wasn’t fairly acquainted with the Japanese standards of ikemen so I thought what a purdy gay playing the role of tough and macho Domyouji. But that was before I knew of Kame-chan’s existence.

Anyway back to the point, Mizushima Hiro is not just an upgraded version of Matsumoto Jun, he IS what Matsumoto Jun should have been. And bonus, Hiro-chan speaks English. And not your typical Engrish with a crappy accent, he speaks the hot and and flawless way, thanks to his stay in Switzerland when he was younger.

Last one though. Btw, Hiro-chan is already married. Despite being only 25. I know. It sucks, but whatever, when you’re married to the gorgeous and talented ayaka, you’re pretty much forgiven in my book.

firsts are always the first and should always be the first to come in mind. well it’s not going to be that way here.
